SECOND SKIN AFTERCARE
“Second skin” locks in the body’s natural moisture and healing enzymes, allowing the body to heal itself in the most efficient manner possible. Under normal circumstances, these healing enzymes dry up and evaporate which reduces their effectiveness. When this happens, longer healing times are required and scabbing and scarring occur. In addition, this type of bandage protects against dirt and germs while eliminating friction and other irritations that might further interfere with the healing process.
How Will It Affect My Ink?
The bandage adhesive will not attach to the weeping area of a tattoo, therefore it can never damage or pull out ink. In fact, customers report that the colors of their tattoo remain more vibrant after using “second skin”, compared to tattoos that have healed by other aftercare products.
Can I Shower While Wearing It?
Yes it is waterproof, however excessive moisture or submersion to water (swimming, bathing, saunas, hot tubs.) should be avoided because it could weaken the adhesion and affect the healing of the tattoo.
Can I Sunbathe With It On?
The bandage does not contain any kind of sun protection, so you should avoid prolonged sun or UV ray exposure. I do not recommend exposing your new tattoo to UV rays, ever – with or without it. Even after your tattoo is fully healed, continue to use sun protection to maintain the integrity of your tattoo.
Can I Exercise While Wearing It?
Exercising with “second skin” is fine, just be aware that sweating can weaken the adhesive and cause the bandage to come off prematurely. So it is always best to keep the sweating to a minimum.
How Long Should It Stay On My Tattoo?
Everyone heals differently. The length of time will depend on how much fluid your tattoo weeps, which will affect the adhesion. Generally, it’s best to keep it on for at least 5 days.
Could I Have An Allergic Reaction?
The bandage is both latex free and hypoallergenic, so allergic reactions are very rare. Some people, however, have very sensitive skin and are allergic to adhesives. If you experience a rash, abnormal skin irritation, or other symptoms of an allergic reaction, discontinue use and wash with mild soap. Consult a physician if necessary.
How Do You Remove It?
It’s easiest to find an edge and stretch it out slowly in the direction of hair growth. DO NOT rip it off. It’s best to remove the bandage in a warm shower, the warmth will loosen the adhesive and make it easier to remove. If that doesn’t work then you can use a small amount of mild soap or coconut oil and apply it to the edge of the bandage, which should weaken the adhesive further.
REMOVAL & GENERAL CARE
The first few days and weeks are the most important for your new tattoo. Make sure you care for it properly by following the instructions below:
1. Leave the bandage that you received on for the allotted time directed by your tattoo artist. (Often 3-5 days)
Tattoos will “ooze”, this is a normal part of the healing process. The bandage is there to keep airborne bacteria and any other contaminants in the environment from invading your wound.
2. Make sure your hands have been washed thoroughly before you remove the bandage.
3. After removing the bandage, cleanse the tattooed area with unscented soap and water. Do not use a soap that is shared amongst others. Do not scrub the tattoo with a brush or towel (this should not be done until the tattoo has healed).
4. Dry the tattooed area by gently patting the area with a clean, sterile towel or paper towel.
5. Let the tattoo dry completely.
6. Lightly rub a thin layer of unscented lotion onto the tattooed area. (such as, Lubriderm, Aveeno, CeraVe or coconut oil/butter.) Do not over lotion as this can affect the healing process.
7. DO NOT re-bandage the area.
8. Repeat steps 3 - 6 above for two weeks, approximately 1-3 times a day.
If the bandage leaks, tears or peaks to the point that part of the tattoo is exposed to open air: it is no longer sterile!
In this case, remove the bandage and proceed with steps 3 - 8, even if it’s sooner than the allotted time advised to keep it on.
Following the bandage removal, you may notice some adhesive residue stuck to the area. This should wash off after a few days!
Consult a physician if you experience symptoms and/or signs of infection such as excessive swelling, redness, yellow or green discharge, and/or fever.
DO NOT go swimming or soak in a hot tub or bath for at least 2 weeks.
DO NOT use hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol on your tattoo.
DO NOT itch, pick, or scratch the tattoo.
DO NOT participate in activities that will make you sweat excessively.
DO NOT wear tight clothing that will rub on the tattoo.
DO NOT rub the tattoo while wet.
Stay out of the sun until your tattoo has healed completely. Apply sunblock to the tattoo after it has fully healed, when it is exposed to the sun to protect it from damaging ultraviolet rays.
The majority of tattoos' healing should be over between 2-6 weeks.
Following all of these simple steps will ensure that you end up with the best result with minimal complications. Proper aftercare determines the result of your tattoo for the rest of your life.
